College was never the safe haven for me that most other people felt it to be. There was pressure and stress from all directions, be it homework or expectations all around. Hence, being a part of activities that occurred on campus was important to me. As I usually was someone who preferred to immerse herself in studies, I sought out something out of my comfort zone. VITeach was introduced to me by a senior, and at first glance, I knew that this was the club for me. As someone who believes in the difference that teachers make, the idea of imparting knowledge to the best of my abilities seemed like a challenge that I was willing to take on. While I knew that taking up such a huge responsibility was a task in itself, I felt like I could do it justice.
What I wasn’t prepared for, however, was the immense happiness and satisfaction that being a VITeacher gave me. Spending my time with those kids, as we basked in the warmth of a nice day; teaching them Math and English (when that was still an option), gave me a greater sense of accomplishment. Every minute spent with those children, forever vying for attention, and clambering without a sense of worry was a minute well spent. Very soon, I could hardly wait for Mondays and Wednesdays to roll by! I was happy, cocooned with those children, seeing the world through their eyes.
But truly, if there’s something that I would cherish about my whole experience working for VITeach, it would have to be the children themselves. Being with them, and teaching them reminded me of a childlike innocence that I had long forgotten. We would do a ‘Word of The Day’ segment, and they were always eager to learn the word to either impress us, or for the treats, which always amused us. Experiences like these remind you that children are capable of being the change that the world needs. Interesting, isn’t it, how they can get you to introspect?
